| In June 2009 BSAPP received several calls from concerned citizens that a dog was in desperate need as she had lost most of her fur and had huge bleeding sores everywhere. BSAPP rescuers Nina and Aglika rushed into action and began to treat her for mange on the streets while they tried to secure a treatment place for her. It wasn't tobe that straightforward however, as in the meantime, the Minicipal Isolator (pound) picked her up and she was put on the list to be euthanised. Upon discovering this, Nina and Aglika once more sprung into action and went to the Isolator to sign release papers into our care! |
With no suitable place for a dog with such a severe condition at our centre, the volunteers of the BSAPP themselves made an emergency fund for her from their own money and quickly paid for 2 weeks hospital care at one of the Animal Hospitals in Sofia, where according to the vet, she only had about 2 days left to live because her condition was so severe.
A skin test revealed Demodex canis. the non-contagious form of mange and the hospital started standard treatment for mange and she was also put on a drip initially as the hospital were very concerned that she was very emaciated and 'worn out'. However the hospital charges were cripplin and with the shelter's limited resources we needed anoter solution and quickly, so long-time supporter Michelle offered to foster her for a while and treat her with classic homeopathy.
Shaki was immediately put on a species appropriate, natural diet to help her body become naturally healthy and she was also started on a month's course of Diatomaceous Earth, which is a natural dewormer and also being a fossil flour has the added advantage of replacing trace minerals into the body.
Once Michelle felt some of the toxins from the hospital treatment had been eliminated by a natural diet, Shaki was assessed by a specialist Classical Homeopath Consultant in the United States using a detailed questionnaire and test results taken here, and it was established that Shaki was suffering from neurological and auto-immune disease which is the likely cause of the mange.
Within a week of starting the homeopathic treatment, fur started to grow at an amazing rate, yet we could never shift the grey skin or heal her completely due to her auto-immune disease and today she is still suffering flare-ups of the mange as the root cause of the mange - her auto-immune disease, is preventing full recovery so we need to now concentrate her homeopathic treatment on fixing her auto-immune disease (incurable with conventional medicine), before we can hope to get her truly mange free
With our original treatment funds now completely exhausted, we need to raise more money to be able to continue her treatment if she is to become mange free for the rest of her life...

Long term due to it being very difficult to find permanent homes for dogs in Bulgaria, we would like to find her a new home somewhere in Western Europe where homeopathy is more widely used which would be helpful for Shakira's future health needs. So, in order to pay for any transportation costs any excess money from her fund will be put aside for this. If anyone is in a postion to offer Shakira a new home, in any country whatsoever, please contact us and we will be more than glad to organise this as it will give us the greatest pleasure to find her a loving "forever home".
If you would like to contribute to Shaki's treatment fund and help her overcome her auto-immune disease to become mange free permanently please use the button at the top of this page to donate as much or as little as you can. Thank you!
Alternatively you may like to sponsor Shaki's treatment on a monthly basis. If you would we will set up reoccurring monthly payments of 15, 10 or 5 Euros, whichever you decide, through Paypal. Your sponsorship will continue until you decide to cancel.
Your kindness is appreciated more than we may ever know!
