No Shelter Services
AidBG - Animals In Distress Bulgaria does not have an animal shelter therefore we are unable to permanantly take strays off the street and house them. At present due to the severe overload of street animals that Bulgaria has, we believe that shelters are not the answer, it will not solve the issue of over population and in turn shelters run the risk of becoming inhumane storage and killing facilities (see "Isolators BG's History" page). Permanent shelters are expensive to build and maintain, eating up scarce resources that are better spent on sterilisation, vaccination and education. It is imperative that we tackle the over population issue first which will then allow us to concentrate on re-homing those animals that are left. It is our inclination as animal lovers to want to keep and take care of each and every animal that we help. Unfortunately, that is not realistic given the current circumstances in Bulgaria. There are simply not enough homes for them to go to and shelters are only going to fill up to the point where they will be euthanized. However, we also understand that some shelters must exist due to the number of animals who are unadoptable because they are old, not of a certain breed, ill or simply because no one wants them. Our position on these shelters is that they should not be in-humane places for the animals to live, (they should not be over-populated and the animals should be treated with care and the facility should be clean and presentable) and that the managers of these shelters should work aggressively to get the animals adopted into loving homes. AidBG actively helps one such shelter locally and fundraises exhaustively to help sponsor the dogs the shelter cares for. We are also active in helping to find loving homes for their animals which in turn frees up space for the shelter to be able to take in additional, vulnerable cases.
